Two Decades of Medical Outreach Projects

With the 1st Medical Outreach carried out in 14-Jun-98 to Kg Timpanggol Laut, Penampang to the 20th Medical Outreach in 25-Apr-15 to Kg. Tiong Widu, Tambunan, RC Luyang has served 5,000 villagers throughout the years.

RC Luyang has been consistently carried out Medical Outreach throughout the years by providing free medical and dental treatment to the rural folks. For 18 years from 1998 till 2015, Rotary Club of Luyang has collaborated with Rotary Club of Raffles City and various district hospitals to carry out 20 Medical Outreach in villages throughout Sabah and treated more than 5,000 villagers.

A major medical outreach, as reported by Rtn. Datuk Dr. Rajagopal on Medical Outreach Sook, Keningau shall be as follows:

On 15-Mar-2003, about 50 Rotarian and families from Rotary Club of Luyang and Rotary Club of Raffles City and Doctors, Rotaractors, Pharmaceutical Assistants, Medical Assistants from the Eye Department, Dental Assistants, Rural Health Nurses were in Sook to carry out the Joint Medical and Dental Outreach.

The group were in Sook for the weekend to offer free medical and dental treatment to villagers from surrounding areas. The two days saw more than 800 people being treated for various medical complaints and tooth extraction. The Project which was a great success also included the distribution of used clothing, magazines, books and food items to the villagers. All the children present were dewormed. The success of this project was a joint effort by all concerned, including the Assistant District Officer, Mr. George Kandavu and his fellow officers who were on hand to assist in this project which was held at the Multi-Purpose Hall in Sook. The State Minister of Cultural, Youth & Sport, YB Tan Sri Datuk Panglima Joseph Kurup was also present to give moral support to them. 


Bicycles Project to Rural Areas

RC Luyang with the collaboration of RC Osaka South distributed 170 units of bicycles to rural children in the Interior District of Nabawan/Sook.

On 19 Jul 2002, six Rotarians led by President Datuk Junior Pang together with eight Rotarians from Rotary Club of Osaka South, 200 school children, parents and invited guests attended the handing over ceremony of bicycles at Nabawan District Office, YB Tan Sri Panglima Joseph Kurup was the Guest of Honour. A total of 100 units of bicycle were distributed to school children in the Nabawan District. 

The Second Joint Bicycle Project between Rotary Club of Luyang and Rotary of Osaka South was carried out on 21 Oct 2003. A total of 70 units of bicycle were given to students at SMK Sook and 12 other primary schools in the area.


Kg. Ambong Gravity Feed Piped Water Project

A WASH project under RI Matching Grant with the collaboration of RC Osaka South and Raleigh International to provide gravity piped water to Kg. Ambong, Kota Belud.

This matching grant project was carried out with the collaborations of Rotary Club of Osaka South and Raleigh International to provide running water supply to Kg. Ambong, Kota Belud. The handing over ceremony was held on 6 Dec 2007 and attended by President Mitsubori Satoru of Rotary Club of Luyang and President Noriyuki of Rotary Club of Osaka South.


Mantanani H2O Project

A WASH Project carried out RC Luyang that won a District award in 2014 DISCON. In collaboration with EcoKnights, Jebsen & Jessen and Blue Life Ecoservices, this project provide a water filtration system for the Mantanani Island, near Kota Belud. Rotary partner in friendship club RC Kanuma Central, Japan.

A major project that RC Luyang started in 2013 is the provision of Water Filtration System for the community living on Mantanani Island off Kota Belud District. The project was carried out in partnership with EcoKnights, a not-for-profit NGO based in Kuala Lumpur and Jebsen & Jessen, a multi-national corporation based in Singapore. Blue Life Ecoservices was the project management outfit.

The project also received financial participation from Rotary Club of Kanuma Central, Japan and individual Rotarians from District 3310 including DG Chew Kim Bok, PP Tan Wah Yuan and PP Leonard Loo.
The project was completed and commissioned in early June 2014, later inspected by Rotarians from Rotary Club of Kanuma Central and Rotary Club of Luyang on 8 June 2014. On the event day, the Rotarians also helped to clean up part of the beach. Upon their return to Kota Belud, PP Datuk Abdullah Sibil hosted a high tea with cultural dances. 


Pneumococcal Vaccination Outreach Programmes 

RC Luyang carry out Pneumococcal Vaccination of 300 children in three separate medical outreaches with Rm80,000 grant from Pfizer Malaysia. Sister club RC Raffles City also took part in the 3rd medical outreach at Kg. Tiong Widu, Tambunan.

The Rotary Year 2014-2015 started off with a contribution worth RM80,000 from Pfizer Malaysia Sdn Bhd comprising of 300 vials of Pneumococcal Vaccination and Cash Contribution of RM5,000 to support our Club’s community project of saving 300 lives from Pneumococcal Diseases.

With the 300 vials available, we carried out three Vaccination Outreach Programmes as follows:
(a) 16 Oct 2014: Vaccination outreach in conjunction with Health Fair organized by State Health Department to vaccine 100 underprivileged children at Kg. Sumbilingon, Ranau.

(b) 15 Feb 2015: Vaccination outreach with Social Welfare Department to vaccine 90 orphans at Rumah Kanak- Kanak Beringgis, Papar.

(c) 25 Apr 2015: Vaccination outreach with the support from Hospital Tambunan to vaccine 110 underprivileged children at Tambunan Widu Resort. 


Communities Water Supply Mitigation Scheme

Scheme implemented to help more than 20 villages in Kota Belud District to obtain clean water supply.

This was done by matching donors with deserving villages that have taken their own initiative to come up with their respective mitigation measures to address the water supply crisis induced by 5.9 magnitude earthquake happen on 5th June 2015. Team up with the Scout Area Commissioner of Kota Belud, Ms Maya Ramdan, RC Luyang has surveyed the villages in the District of Kota Belud and reviewed the aid requested by the respective Village Representative, drawn up the budget for each villages and presented to various NGOs that are keen to help. The aids were disbursed through supply of construction materials whereas the villages have to carry out the implementation by their own sweat equity, and undertake for the maintenance & upkeeping of the systems. Partner organizations include: Yayasan Hasanah, RC KK South + Australia High Comm, Inner Wheel KK, Pacos Trust, Raleigh Borneo and Inner Wheel District 331.

IU Bazaar with Shan Tao Interactors 

IU Bazaar – International Understanding Bazaar is an annual event organized by Interact Clubs around Kota Kinabalu that showcase the culture of different countries of choice by the Interact Clubs.

IU Bazaar is organized by Interact Clubs around Kota Kinabalu and supervised by RC KK. The usual participating schools include Interact Club from All Saint, Maktab Sabah, KK High, Stella Maris, La Salle, Lok Yuk, St Francis Convent and others. SM Shan Tao was invited and they represented Japan. The event aims to promote understanding of foreign countries and cultures while enabling the students to immerse themselves in the culture of the chosen country.

RC Luchu Installation Taiwan

Attending sister club 34th Installation of President Yong 楊晉榮 RC Luchu, Taiwan by President Kenneth Tan.

In the last month of his presidency, Rtn Kenneth Tan visited sister club RC Luchu to congratulate President Yang on his installation function. This has re-kindled the friendship with our Taiwanese sister club after a few years of absence.


Sukau Eco Tour with RC Raffles City

Sister club RC Raffles City, Singapore attended our installation and took part in a 2D1N Eco Tour to Sukau, Sandakan.

The tour was organized by VP Stephen Siaw and accompanied by IPP Kenneth Tan. RC Raffles City was represented CP Low Siew Joon, PP Dr Chin Koy Nam, PP Vincent Chen, IPP Sigrid Zialcita, Rtn James Yap, Rtn Mark Chng Chee Pin, Rtn Tan Siew Ching & spouses – 9 pax in total. The tour include an early flight by Airasia to Sandakan, breakfast at water village, three cruises on Kinabatangan River - night & dawn safari for birds watching. Also a jungle trekking before returning to Sandakan.


Seminar on Origin Point Therapy 

The second major seminar held at Palace Hotel that attracts 150 participants. GOH was IPDG Philip Chong.

The full day seminar was organized by RC Luyang sponsored program Rotary Community Corps of Karamunsing. Presented by Senior Practitioner from Singapore, Raymond Lim, the topic covered the theory, practical and case studies of the pain management system. Jess Fung emceed the event that witnessed a room full of 150 participants. RC Luyang Rotarian involved President Mavis, IPP Kenneth, AG Kent Chau, Rtn Aaron Fong and PP Francis Chan. Session chaired by RCC Chairman Ken Lo.


D3310 (Sabah) Vocational Service & TRF Seminars

The combined Vocational Service & Rotary Foundation Seminar for District 3310, Sabah zone was organized by RC Luyang.

The two seminars were held at Zara's Boutique Hotel, Kota Kinabalu on 12 Nov 2016...attended by 66 Rotarians from the nine Rotary Clubs in Kota Kinabalu and RC Labuan. The TRF Seminar was held in conjunction of the 100th Years Centennial of Rotary Foundation. Speakers include DG Michael Yee, PP Rajamohan (DG 2020), PDG Datuk Zainie, PP Vincent Pung & PP Jimmy Pang. The vocational service seminar included a plenary session with Interact Teacher Adviser and Rotaractor Turned Rotarians. President Mavis, RC Luyang did the summary remarks.

Cheshire Home Christmas Party 

RC Luyang co-host the Christmas Party organized by Cheshire Home Management for the families of kids and attendees of the home.

The Christmas celebration was held at Cheshire Home kg. Likas and brought joys to the families of 46 handicapped adults and 26 handicapped children. Activities include lucky draws, karaoke, caroling and band performance, not forgetting the Christmas feast. Attended by DGE Datuk Lee CW, AG Kent Chau, Incoming AG Francis Chan, President Mavis and more than 20 Rotarians and families.


Promoting Robotics with Rotaract Club

RC Luyang collaborated with ICS Rotaractors to organize a Robotics Competition for primary school students around KK area.

The Rotaract Club of INTI College Sabah recently organized a two days “Borneo Creative Robotics Challenge”, where primary school students from various schools in and around Kota Kinabalu had the opportunity to showcase their robotics design with Lego Mindstorms, on 7th & 8th October 2017. Held at Suria Sabah Shopping Mall in the state capital of Sabah, it was open to all primary schools here and had two categories – Primary (aged 6 to 9) and Advanced (aged 10 to 13). Altogether 33 teams from 11 primary schools took part in the robotics competition. The competition was jointly organized with CR8 Robotics Borneo, a Robotics Learning Centre situated in Metro Town, Kota Kinabalu.

Medical Outreach Minitampak 

Collaboration between RC Luyang, ICS Rotaract Club, Care Malaysia & Kota Marudu General Hospital to provide health screening to Kg. Minitampak, Kota Marudu in Jan 2018.

On 28th Jan 2018, the Rotaract Club of INTI College Sabah together with Malaysian Care organised this mini medical outreach to a small village called Kg Minitampak 3, in Kota Marudu District. Perched 684m on a hillside, the village is accessed through an 8KM continuous uphill road that becomes a very slippery mud track especially during the rainy season. This outreach is also supported by the Rotary Club of Luyang and the Kota Marudu District Hospital with the aim of assessing the needs of this area and its surrounding villages. More than 100 villagers turned up, and many of them came from other more remote villages from as far as Ulu Bengkoka, which means a half-day trek to our location. There is certainly a huge need for medical services in this area, and the Rotary Club of Luyang is looking forward to organise a more comprehensive outreach the the area in the near future. Big Brothers Big Sisters

Fellowship & networking between Rotaractors and Interators. Led by Youth Director Aaron Fong, RC Luyang held the event at SM Shan Tao, attended by 30+ Interactors, 7 Rotaractors and 5 Rotarians.

The event was organized to promote friendship among Rotarators and Interactors and possible role modeling of college student by secondary school student. Activities include motivational talks by District Rotaract Representative Rytha Lew, RAC ICS President Chong May Yen and RC Luyang President Chung Zheng Uyee, follow with a game of Captain Ball. Rotarian attended include AG Francis Chan, President Chung, Rtn Joseph, Rtn Aaron and PP Kenneth.


Tree Planting at SK Lok Yuk

Tree planting project with the collaboration of Judiciary Officers from Kota Kinabalu High Court, at SK Lok Yuk, Menggatal.

Initiated by President Chung who have arranged for the supply of seedling from nursery. The school has a student population of around 300 but have planting corners and small ponds formed with recycled products. Project was in collaboration with Judiciary Officers from Kota Kinabalu High Court, led by High Court Deputy Registrar Elsie Primus. The environmentally conscious science teacher even keep a mini hatchery of turtles.


RCC Yuan Shi Dian (YSD) Workshop 7&14 Jul 2018.

Rotary Community Corps of Karamunisng organized Yuan Shi Dian (Original Point Therapy) Workshop. It teach the participants on pain management technics and theory on bodily heat energy.

Fifth series in the running, RCC Karamunsing kick started the Rotary Year 2018-2019 by organizing a pain management workshop on 7th Jul 2018. The method is called Original Point Therapy, or Yuan Shi Dian in Mandarin. The workshop was held at the RCC OPT Centre @ Komplex Karamunsing. It is consists of two 8hours session, with the second session to be held on 14 Jul. Workshop conducted by RCC Chair, Mr. Ken Lo assisted by Team Leader Sean Lim and five other volunteers. We have two live testimonials in Roland Chong and Jason Oh shared their own experience at the workshop.
